Amateur jockey Marcus Haddock made a dream start to his race-riding career with a winner on his first mount when Soundbyte gained a thrilling success at Nottingham for Chastleton trainer John Gallagher.
Haddock, 23, got the nine-year-old home in the final strides of an amateur riders’ handicap over a mile and six furlongs to pip Taste The Wine by a head.
He said he had been involved with horses since he was a teenager, but took a break after his grandad died.
It was a fairy-tale success as Haddock had ridden Soundbyte – who was winning for the first time since 2011 – since he was a three-year-old.
Spiraea claimed a third victory of the season for Leafield owner-trainer Mark Rimell at Salisbury.
Kilfinichen Bay broke his duck on his first start for Chipping Norton trainer Charlie Longsdon with a win at Southwell.
