£300,000 boost for travellers' sites

AUTHORISED traveller and gypsy sites in Oxfordshire have been handed a £300,000 Government cash injection.

Five sites - Sandford, East Challow, Wheatley, Red Bridge Hollow and Standlake - have been allocated grants to improve living conditions.

The sites are run by Oxfordshire County Council.

The council's head of community safety, Nigel Strick, said: "This latest government funding will enable us to complete the improvements to the county council's permanent traveller sites."

Minister for gypsies and travellers, Iain Wright, said: "This funding is vital in delivering both new and improved sites, ensuring that gypsies and travellers have authorised, decent places to live.

"We look to local authorities to show real leadership in taking forward what can be a contentious issue on the ground."
