  • A415 risks

Sir, Despite the recent loss of life on the A415, while travelling back from Standlake towards Cokethorpe School at 48mph - on cruise control - we were overtaken at high speed by a car going into the bends. Further on, by Cokethorpe entrance, we were faced with a car coming towards us, which was overtaking at an excessively high speed. read more

  • We will not move, councillor!

Sir, Regarding the future of Marriotts Close and plans for the area (Witney Gazette, December 20), while I have expressed my personal views over the years on its future, views that do not accord with those expressed by the planners, I console myself with the fact that it might well be that I am not around to see the finished project, assuming it takes as long to come to fruition as it has to come to a possible decision. Just in case, I will say now: "I told you so." read more

  • Disregard

Sir, I address my following comments to district councillor Peter Handley: Progress is inevitable, destruction is avoidable. As you represent Carterton, may I suggest that you leave Witney alone, and concentrate your efforts in Carterton, which may benefit from your idea of a better skyline, maybe by removing derelict prefabs and erecting a multi-storey car park, or even a cinema in their place, or maybe you could get someone to occupy the newly-constructed units, which are standing empty. A fate I hope won't befall the development you so desire. I don't know where you live Mr Handley, but I presume it is not overlooking this overcrowded, out-of-keeping-transport-nightmare development, oh sorry, better skyline and good-looking car park building. I look forward to receiving your personal cheque, which will fund my move to Burford, and to you being on hand to chauffeur me around, as I don't drive, which is why I don't live in a village at present. read more

  • Balanced?

Sir, Councillor Harvey's comments, in his letter entitled Balanced' (December 13), have finally revealed the planner's lack of (strategic) thinking behind the whole Marriotts Close fiasco. read more

  • Ignored

Sir, Re: your front page, Marriotts verdict is a 'Yes' (December 20). So West Oxfordshire district councillors know best. It does not matter what the people of Witney want. read more

  • Just profit

Sir, So the council is going to allow the overdevelopment of the centre of Witney, just as they had always planned. read more

  • Achieving

Sir, The article entitled 'Schools score top marks' (December 13) continually referred to children passing end of Key Stage 2 (KS2) SATs. read more
