Sir – I was interested to read the article about the Prime Minister supporting a feasibility study for the reopening of the Witney to Oxford railway (Gazette, August 27).
I think a reliable alternative to the A40 gridlock would be of great benefit to the people of Witney and the surrounding area.
I was a regular passenger on this line in the 1950s and I have fond memories of those railway journeys.
The line closed to passengers in 1962 due to the increasing use of road transport.
The prospect of reopening the line presents an interesting irony, as this would be likely to be for the same reason as the original closure.
Richard Baigent, Witney
