Sir – I write as someone who has regularly commuted between Witney and Oxford for 20 years using the area’s main road – the A40, and so has first hand experience of its increasing inadequacy.

At 6.45 am on weekdays the Witney bypass is at a standstill and the section travelling from Oxford to Eynsham is often at a standstill from early afternoon until mid evening.

The last Conservative government under John Major cancelled the dualling of this section of the A40 on environmental grounds and so created today’s infrastructure crisis.

All the other problems can be solved relatively easily but for the A40 there is no easy solution.

The unpalatable truth is that further housing development of this area (the Chipping Norton area is a different case) should cease until the A40 problem is solved.

Local government must stand up to central government and say: “You created the problem. No more housing until you solve it.”
