Sir – Rail industry data published last month shows total passenger journeys starting or ending at Hanborough station exceeded 201,000 in 2013-14 and have almost trebled in eight years.

The Cotswold Line Promotion Group says more than 200 cars a day now cram into the car park extension built for 191 vehicles, which opened only 18 months ago.

When Hanborough station’s new car park was announced in 2011 I warned that “parking never satisfies demand; it only attracts more cars”, it “would consume a lot of land” and “increase traffic and hence congestion, emissions, health risks and casualties”.

However, in June Stagecoach retimed buses on its route 233, linking Woodstock, Long Hanborough, Witney and Burford, creating several good connections with train services at Hanborough station. Some rail passengers from Witney can now avoid driving.

The 06.10 bus from Witney reaches Hanborough in good time for the 06.39 train to Paddington.

The 07.15 bus arrives well before the 08.01 train. The 17.32 train from Oxford reaches Hanborough in time for the 17.54 bus to Witney and Burford.

The 17.22 train from Paddington reaches Hanborough in time for the 18.49 bus to Witney.

On Saturdays the 08.15 bus from Burford (08.40 from Witney) reaches Hanborough in time for the 09.15 train to Paddington.

The 17.21 train from Paddington reaches Hanborough in time for the 18.49 bus to Witney.

However, on weekdays not everyone working in London can catch the 17.22 train from Paddington. Were Stagecoach to add one further evening trip on the 233 to connect with the 18.22 train from Paddington, even more people could leave their cars at home.
