Increase was a disgrace

Sir – I note with disdain and incredulity, that the town council’s portion of the new council tax has increased by more than five per cent.

Could this possibly have anything to do with the fiasco of the failed appeal of the Madley Park Hall court case?

If so, why do these councillors feel the public should fund their mistakes? And what safeguards have been put in place to ensure that this is never repeated?

It appears that a few councillors have lost sight of their accountability to council tax payers by ploughing ahead with their own agenda regardless of the cost and outcome.

I hope the electorate shows its disgust at this behaviour at the forthcoming elections.

Gill Scott, Queen Emma’s Dyke, Witney

One candidate I certainly shan't be voting for is Simon Hoare, who is standing in what his campaign literature calls "Hailey, Minster Lovell & Leaifield (sic) Ward".

It is worrying to think that a man with as little regard for detail, and as slapdash an attitude to things that matter, should be the Cabinet Member (such a pompous title!) with particular responsibility for Resources.

Little surprise therefore that it was on his watch that the authority squandered some £120,000 of our hard-won cash on paying hush money to its former Strategic Director.

Either he was asleep on the job, or he couldn't be bothered to check, so he took the "easy" step of trying to knowingly mislead the official Auditor by misrepresenting this payment in the accounts.

Time for a change, I think!

I also think that a change is long overdue, but knowing the local electorate,as I do, I very much doubt that it will happen. Witney had a chance to change the political balance of the town council last year but threw away the opportunity. So come on ,every non tory voter, wake up and go to vote, its no good complaining afterwards
