Water bills benefit from London links

Sir – While I can sympathise with Stephen Harness about the poor timing of Thames Water’s communications (End water monopoly, Witney Gazette, March 28), he should be careful about what he wishes for.

I think he will find that the average water bill across Thames Water’s region (for many a year the lowest in the country) is heavily subsidised by the economies of scale that are achieved within the Greater London area.

Should Oxfordshire be separated from this source of efficiency, his bill might look somewhat different – to say the least.

Any payment towards the efficiency of London’s sewerage system may well be money well spent, even for an Oxfordshire customer.
