A Titanic connection

Sir – On this, the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, readers may not be aware of a link between the ship and Witney.

My father, John Hirons, who lived in Witney for about 50 years, told me that some of the doorknobs for the Titanic were made by Daniel Young Ltd, of Bridge Street, Witney. He knew the younger Daniel Young quite well and, in fact, he was collecting material for a short history of the firm when he died.

They were brass founders, as well as engineers, to various Witney mills. So I have no reason to doubt the story.

Paul Hirons, Buckingham
