‘Soccer’ is truly British

Sir – From where on earth does PF Pete (letters, May 9) get the idea that the term “soccer” is an American import?

This shorthand for Association Football must have been around for 100 years.

I can remember the expression being used during my schooldays during the Second World War, well before the Americans showed the slightest interest in the game.
