Woman airlifted after crash closes A40

A DRIVER was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a two-car crash that closed the A40 near Oxford today.

Emergency crews were called to the scene of the accident at about 11.30am today.

The incident shut the road between the Woodstock Road roundabout and the Eynsham roundabout.

Police said a blue Volvo V70 estate heading towards Oxford was involved in a head-on collision with a green Peugeot 206 estate.

The driver and a passenger in the Volvo and the driver of the Peugeot were cut from their vehicles.

The air ambulance was called to the scene, and airlifted the driver of the Peugeot, a woman, to hospital.

The driver of the Volvo and a passenger were also taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital

Traffic built up in both directions and the road was closed for several hours.

PC Dan Henderson, investigating the collision said: "This is a busy road and there must have been some drivers who may have witnessed the collision. I urge anyone who may have seen this happen, or the cars being driven prior to the collision to contact me."

Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact PC Henderson via 0845 8 505 505, or if you do not want to talk to the police or give your name, call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
