Npower Village Cup

Shipton-under-Wychwood crashed out of the competition in thrilling fashion as they lost by one run at Aston Rowant in an Oxfordshire quarter-final.

The two-time national champions failed to get the one run needed off the final two deliveries of the match as Rowant edged to the closest of victories.

Rowant won the toss and elected to bat, and this looked a good decision as Alex Jewell and Chris Watling putting on 64 for the first wicket.

Jewell fell to Shaun Miller, who took a sharp caught and bowled, but Watling continued to push the ball around.

Rowant were looking good for a total of around the 200 mark, but this all changed with a superb spell of bowling from Miller and Dickon Morris, who strangled the Rowant middle order.

Forced to push the score on, Rowant panicked and succumbed to 147 all out.

In response, Rowant's Ryan Dutton, bowling with considerable pace, removed the dangerous Steve Bates for a duck.

Paul Hemming also fell cheaply, before youngsters Charlie Brain and Tim Senior began chipping away at the total.

At 105-4 from 29 overs, Jon Hartley holed out, and it came down to Shipton requiring six from the last over.

Chris Panter scampered two from the first bal, but Ian Lewis was run out second ball.

Three scrambled singles followed, leaving Shipton with just one needed.

Shaun Miller fell for a duck on the penultimate ball, bowled by Simon Bird, and with the field in, Alex Jewell stood up to the stumps and Christian Brain was unable to get bat on ball, leaving Shipton stranded one short.
