DISCOUNT operators Lidl face rejection for a new store in Witney.

Their application to build a 1,000 square metre outlet next to McDonald's, in Ducklington Lane, comes before West Oxfordshire District Council's lowlands planning sub-committee next Monday.

Letters of support and protest have come in to the council, but planning officer Phil Shaw is recommending refusal.

Although he says the store would not harm existing shops in the town, he adds there are real worries about the impact on the local road network, as well as poor building designs.

Another discount store operator, Aldi, is expected to put in planning application soon for an outlet in Carterton.

Thank goodness for common sense. We cannot cope with any extra demands on the road system round there. I do hope it is rejected. There's no shortage of places to shop.

Disgraceful to be putting such a kybosh on an excellent store.

If the council give a hoot about the town and the people who both live here AND who effectively pay their wages, they will WELCOME Lidly and Adli stores wholeheartedly.

Afterall, surely a community should cater for ALL who live in it, and not just the ones who have expensive tastes?
