Lidl store plan rejected

A controversial plan for a new Lidl discount store in Witney has been rejected by West Oxfordshire district councillors.

The lowlands planning sub-committee turned down the proposal for a 1,000 square metre store at Ducklington Lane, on land next to the McDonald's drive-in.

The council received many letters of both support and opposition.

Officers said a discount store would not harm existing shops in the town, but it was rejected because of the impact of extra traffic on the local road network, as well as poor building designs.

I think it is a shame. First ASDA and now Lidl. Witney is growing and can not continue to support the size of the town with one main store, Sainsburys.

This is typical of Witney.The shops etc being built on Marriotts Close will cause far more traffic problems than the proposed Lidl store. As Laura Williams said, first ASDA and now Lidl. Does someone have a vested interest in keeping competition out of town!!! Witney needs another store now. Councillors please wake up.

Will the council please inform the people who VOTED them in the exact numbers of letters/email received FOR the Lidl store, and the numbers received against?

I think it would be prudent to let the townspeople know precisely where public favour stood in this matter - because of the majority of support was FOR the store then the council should be ashamed of itself for not listening to the people who elected them.

I will be keeping my fingers crossed that the Aldi application for Carterton does not suffer this same fate.

Sainsburys was allowed permission to build in the face of stiff competition originally. Allowed to extend when other developemnts were disallowed. M&S, Debenhams, etc. allowed with inherent parking/access problems Perhaps it is a class thing!! ASDA would have been a great benefit and REDUCED traffic problems in the town. The logic seems skewed.

I thought we lived in a place where we could have freedom of choice! Well here is yet another example of how the council choses for us. Everybody I spoke to was in favour of a Lidl store in Witney, so how come the planning application was rejected? Poor building design and traffic problems? Lidl uses the same building design for all their stores, so how come they are fine everywhere else?? It doesn't make any sense!

Where the council missed the boat, was refusing permission for ASDA who would have been a great benefit to the town. The only two supermarkets which have reasonable parking, just happen to be the most expensive places to shop. While I would not wish to see a poor persons store like Lidl setting up in the twon, the council really should encourage an Asda, Morrisons or Tesco into the area.

the council members hae been bribed by sainsbury's and few more..thats all i can say reading all the coments and news..only sainsbury is there and ppl r saying it can not support the masses..so the only hings which comes in my mind is "curruption"..

Smells of a few back handers to me. Surely a store on the out skirts of the town causes fewer traffic probelms than the monstrocity taking shape in the centre of the town.
