WITNEY is to have its first gay pride festival, but there will not, as in Oxford, be a parade through the town.

Witney Pride is on Saturday, August 30, at the New Inn, Corn Street, with karaoke, live bands, and fancy dress.

Organiser, Toni LeBusque, said: "It is not just for gay people, it is for everybody.

"We'd like families to come along too.

"We had thought of a parade, but then saw it was a bit difficult to organise, what with insurance and other things. The idea started as a bit of fun on the social website Facebook, and has grown from there." The event has set up its own website, witneypride.org.uk, and is inviting people not just from the area, but also from Oxford and beyond.

One of the bands booked to play, Elephant Shelf, is a leading transgender blues outfit from London.

New Inn pub landlord, Martin Cornish, and former town fire station officer Steve Fletcher are part of the other live act, Gastric Band, playing blues and rock.

The day starts at noon, and is booked to go on until 1am, both inside the pub and, weather permitting, in the garden.

Whats with "Gay Pride"? When is Straight Pride? The day after Home Pride? Half of the reason people get irritated and are labelled homophobes is because this crap is shoved in peoples faces. Its tragic

Why don't you organise a straight pride then?

I'd love to see it. A bunch of fat, hairy gutted men standing around drinking beer and and **** on their shoes when they're too drunk to throw a dart.

Organise straight pride, big mouth...let's see you...come on...

Gay pride, why have a seperate march let everyone march together, but I am very worried about the Witney march as I am sure parents will take young children to watch, that would not be to bad if the people in the march behaved in a proper manner, 2 years I ago went to the Sydney march for no other reason than I had never been to one it started off alright but then turned into a very obscene show I didn't mind the police being dressed in pink uniforms or the army and fire brigade dressing in tight silver pants I'm sure that turned somepeople on but when the Dykes on Bikes came along topless and playing with each other it began to get a bit out of hand next was a topless bus with naked men some with erections doing what 16 year olds do in the bathroom with the door locked, there were children there this annoyed me as I thought the parents were wrong in exposing them to this kind of thing, I hope Witney people have more sense than Sydney people, I have nothing against gays as it takes all kinds but please behave in a decent manner in public

So you are gay. Big deal, get over it will you!

No-one cares if you prefer men over women, or bat for the other side. You don't see heterosexual men and women shouting out to everyone "hey guess what? I'm straight"

It's not a big deal in 2008. It's not been a big deal for a good few years.

But you make it a big deal and that's what causes friction.

I say get over it ... and grow up!
