SCOUTS in Witney have been collecting old clothes for recycling to raise thousands of pounds towards the cost of a new base.
The rag bag scheme has been proving popular, with people dropping their old clothes at four bins through the town. There is one at the Scout Hut in Marlborough Lane, one at B&Q in Thorney Leys Park and two at the Sainsbury’s store, in Witan Way.
About £15,000 has been raised in the past year for the Stable Barn project, a plan to create a £360,000 new home for Witney Buttercross Scout Group.
The site, opposite the current hut, will provide extra room for three Scout groups, four Beaver colonies, three Cub packs and an Explorer unit.
Having raised £110,000 to buy the building, the group needs to raise a further £250,000 for the conversion. So far they have raised £25,000.
Andrew Stokes, leader of Witney Scouts, said: “Having two local stores support us is really good.”
