Fall in unemployed claiming benefits across the county

THE number of people unemployed and claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance in Oxfordshire fell last month.

Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show there were 6,447 claimants in November, a fall of 79 people or 1.5 per cent.

It is the eighth consecutive monthly fall in the figures and over the last 12 months the number of claimants has fallen by 1,165.

All districts of the county show a small fall in the number of claimants except Oxford (up by six) and West Oxfordshire (up by 13).

The percentage of people unemployed in the county is 1.5 per cent, compared to 3.8 per cent nationally.

A reduction of just 79 people isn't exactly a statement of the Coalition's successful back-to-work policy, and many of the 1,165 reduction over the past 12 months could well have been for those placed on courses and other cunning ploys and temporarily removed off the unemployed list, or other ways in which they massage the statistics. Of more interest would be the numbers of foreign EU workers claiming reciprocal benefits, and maybe going back home for Christmas.

Exactly true, and well put Myron! This government is using partially baked figures to portray a sense of success when it is not anything of the sort.

These figures ought to be examined in the light of seasonality, and reality. Many people are being taken off benefits because they are put into 'self-employment', when in fact they hardly are earning any large sums of money!

It is a fiddle, when these people end up with far less money than when they worked, and have only a few hours of work every week!

It's a scandal.

NO IT IS NOT. That is the % of unemployed people allowed to claim the benefit that these figures pertain to, that is all.

As they say, 'there are statistics, and damned statistics'. I guess this lot belongs in the latter category.

Another saying goes, 'you can always make statistics say anything'.

No wonder Hitler could deceive the Germans and for a while, the rest of the world!
