CHIPPING Norton Town Council will discuss the land dispute which is delaying the proposed Greystones recycling centre next week.

West Oxfordshire District Council came up with the plan to create the centre at its former depot south of the town after the county council closed its Dean Pit recycling centre, near Chadlington, in September 2011.

A strip of land owned by the town council is needed to improve access to the depot, off the A361 Burford Road, for its new role.

Town councillors met West Oxfordshire district councillors and officers to discuss the issue just before Christmas but failed to reach an agreement over rent.

Simon Hoare, West Oxfordshire’s cabinet member for finance, claimed that the town council had asked for “hundreds of thousands of pounds” in rent for the land.

In a statement, the town council said talks were continuing and added: “We are hoping to come to a beneficially satisfactory agreement for the community whom we have been elected to represent.”

The town council meeting is at 7.15pm on Monday, in the Town Hall.
