DOG owners are being given the opportunity to get their pet microchipped for free this month in Witney.
Last year, West Oxfordshire District Council picked up 236 lost or stray dogs, over a third of which were never reunited with their owners.
A microchip contains contact information for the dog’s owner, which can then be scanned and read by a vet or council officer.
Doing the microchipping this month, the council’s stray dogs officer Dawn Long says the free service has had a great response.
She said: “At the moment, a collar and a tag is a legal requirement.
“But if a dog gets lost then its collar can be removed.”
The free service is for West Oxfordshire district residents only. There are still some places left on January 28 and 30 at the WFS Country Shop in Burford Road, but booking is essential.
