Oxfordshire's two HMV stores are to stay open.

Administrators Deloitte have today circulated a list of 66 stores around the UK earmarked for closure and the Cornmarket Street in Oxford and Castle Street in Banbury outlets have been saved.

Shoppers flocked to Oxford’s HMV store in January as it was plunged into administration and uncertainty grew over its future.

The community reacted with sadness at the thought of losing a big name in Oxford which many saw as much more than a shop.

It opened in the late 1980s and will now continue to host more gigs and other events as administrators look to secure the future of the chain.

Nick Edwards, joint administrator, said: “This step has been taken in order to enhance the prospects of securing the business’ future as a going concern.

"We continue to receive strong support from staff and are extremely grateful to them for their commitment during an understandably difficult period. "All other key stakeholders remain very supportive and I continue to be hopeful of securing a future for the restructured business.”

The music giant went into administration on January 15.
