COMMENT: Credit where it's due

IT is an unfortunate sign of the times that an Oxford credit union is looking to expand across the county.

This is an excellent organisation, but we hope they will not be offended if we say that it’s a shame it feels the need to grow.

Credit unions exist as a community scheme that hopefully offer an avenue away from loan sharks and some of the more expensive moneylenders whose terms can quickly turn a bad financial situation into a dire one.

They are a genuine example of David Cameron’s notional Big Society, but their proliferation, along with food banks, is a sure sign that we live in very hard times.

We wish the credit union every success, but have no doubt that this is one enterprise whose bosses would be delighted to see customer demand die out altogether.
