HILDA MARSTERS was surrounded by cards, gifts and flowers as friends celebrated her 100th birthday in Eynsham.

Mrs Marsters, who was brought up in East Oxford and worked at Oxford University Press, celebrated her centenary on Friday.

And then on Monday her friends at Eynsham Day Centre held a party.

Mrs Marsters said: “If you go back to 1913, we had candles to go to bed and used to play in the streets because there were very few cars then.”

She married Leslie Marsters in 1937 at St Aldate’s Church. The couple celebrated 69 years together and retired to New Marston before Mr Marsters’ death.

Mrs Marsters, who had two sons, later moved to Eynsham. She has six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
