County council fourth best authority for cutting carbon

Oxfordshire County Council is the fourth highest performing council in England for cutting carbon, according to an Environment Agency league table for 2011/12.

The council’s annual carbon emissions decreased by 15 per cent over the year, saving taxpayers £257,000 in carbon tax.

The cuts have been achieved through more accurate meter readers, so staff can see where energy is being used, more efficient lighting, reduced office space and car use and raised awareness.
