PUPILS from primary schools have created the programme cover and posters for this year’s Witney Carnival.

More than 150 children entered a competition to design the promotional material for this year’s event on Saturday, July 13.

The carnival organisers asked them to come up with designs inspired by this year’s carnival theme of Witney through the ages.

Blake Primary School pupil Bethan Langley’s artwork was chosen to adorn the carnival programme cover, while Queen’s Dyke Primary School pupil Oscar Wileman’s design was chosen for the poster.

Both were presented with £20 of book tokens and their schools both received £50 of tokens.

St Mary’s Infants School pupil Alfie Barefield was named the runner-up. The five-year-old won a £10 book token and a £25 token for his school.

Carnival committee chairman Ron Spurs, of Witney Rotary Club, said: “I think that both the designs that were chosen show a great deal of creativity and reflect the theme of the carnival.

“It was difficult to choose. The children put in an awful lot of effort into it and spent a lot of time on the designs.”

This year’s Witney Carnival, which is sponsored by the Witney Gazette, will begin with a procession of floats, dancers and musicians making its way through the town from The Leys at 11am.

The carnival, which is jointly orgnaised by the town’s Rotary and Lions clubs and the Round Table, will then be officially opened on The Leys at 12.15pm, launching an all-action afternoon.

Mr Spurs said: “The carnival will be the usual mixture of arena events, stalls and attractions for all ages and all members of the family.

“It is free entry. Anyone can come along and they need not spent a penny if they do not want to.”
