Sport players hope to take over ground

WEST Witney Sports Ground could have a new clubhouse, better access, more car parking and pitches that do not flood.
A sports users group hopes to form a charity to take over its running from Witney Town Council.
The group, as West Witney Sports Association, hopes to bring together the club’s separate leases with the council into one 40-year lease.
Group chairman Liam Walsh also hopes to replace the clubhouse with a new building. Ideas include a sports bar and changing facilities, along with rooms for meetings or dance clubs.
Mr Walsh is also thinking of a sports hall with ten pin bowling and soft play. The group is talking to Sport England about cash.
The sports ground, in Burford Road, has about 1,500 regular users.
In April the council scrapped its policy of selling the site to developers. Councillor Roger Curry said the 40-year lease “sounded a good idea” but he said the users have to make a formal application.
Sports Solution GB, who are reviewing the town’s facilities, will report to a leisure and recreation meeting on September 30.
