FIREWORKS and bonfires lit up the night sky across West Oxfordshire as Guy Fawkes celebrations began at the weekend.

Witney Rugby Club staged its traditional spectacular show at its Hailey Road ground on Sunday.

Among the spectators was 10-year-old Jake Godwin, who attends Ducklington Primary School. He said: “I thought it was awesome, especially the grand finale when rockets shot up in the air in lots of different colours.”

Wychwood Primary School and Shipton-under-Wychwood Cricket Club staged their show on Saturday at the cricket ground.

Spectators enjoyed a barbecue, with glow bands and toffee apples on sale for youngsters.

Chipping Norton resident Emily Hickman took her children Olivia Keen, 19 months, and Theo Keen, six, to the show. She said: “It was absolutely fantastic.”

Proceeds from the display will go to the school and cricket club.

  • On Friday night the annual Hanborough Musical Fireworks show will take place at Long Hanborough’s playing field. Gates open at 6pm, with fireworks from 7.15pm. Tickets are £3 for adults and £2 for children.
