CAMPAIGNERS gathered signatures outside Witney’s under-threat post office to protest against its planned move.

The Post Office has revealed it wants to move from its Market Square premises to the WH Smith store in the Woolgate next March.

In February the company said it was one of 70 Crown branches across the UK facing closure.

More than 50 residents attended a consultation at the Blue Boar, in Market Square, last month where opposition to the plans was described as “unanimous”.

On Saturday Chad Croom, from the Communication Workers Union (CWU), joined Duncan Enright, a West Oxfordshire district councillor, in collecting signatures for a petition calling for the post office to stay put.

Mr Croom said they collected 200 signatures in two hours which will now be sent to the Post Office head office.

He said: “One message that was repeated to us was that nobody could see a benefit to the relocation.”

The Post Office said there were benefits to moving, including longer opening hours and better accessibility.
