A LORRY driver was left with a fractured arm and broken teeth after a “completely unprovoked attack” outside a Witney nightclub.

Rafal Czekalinski, of The Willows, Witney, is starting a seven-year jail sentence after he admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The 19-year-old headbutted, kicked and punched Simon MacDonald on April 7 outside the now-closed iZi nightclub in Market Square, Witney.

Cathy Olliver, prosecuting, said Czekalinski attacked his victim after the 37-year-old asked him why he had tried to close a door on him.

She said this led to the Pole’s “completely unprovoked attack”, in which he headbutted Mr MacDonald to the ground before kneeing, punching and kicking him repeatedly.

Miss Olliver said the teenager then left his victim lying outside, where he was found by bar staff, who called an ambulance.

Judge Gordon Risius said Mr MacDonald was taken to Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital and was in pain for several weeks.

He said the lorry driver had his teeth capped and had to take eight weeks’ unpaid leave at a cost of £4,000.

Adrian Amer, defending, said the attack was totally out of character for his client, who has no previous criminal convictions.

He said: “It was an unprovoked attack, and there is no way anyone can get around it.

“His excuse is, his reason is, that he consumed a large quantity of alcohol throughout the night.

“His loss of temper was extremely impulsive, was sudden and was for no good reason.

“He is at a loss to know or understand why he acted in that way.”

Mr Amer added that since the attack his client has “kept himself to himself” and not gone out drinking.

He also said that since arriving in the UK, Czekalinski had worked hard in a factory to support himself and his partner.

But Judge Risius said the barrister’s request for a suspended sentence was unrealistic.

He said to the defendant: “Mr MacDonald had to take eight weeks off work, he lost nearly £4,000 in wages, he suffered extra expense and he risked losing his job.

“All because you were not in control of yourself that evening.

“Serve your sentence and then with your partner make something of your life so this wholly regrettable episode can be a memory.”

He sentenced Czekalinski to seven years in prison with a £120 victims’ surcharge.
