WITNEY’S Post Office will close on March 12, bosses have revealed.

The Post Office has decided to go ahead with a plan, previously revealed by the Oxford Mail, to move the service into the WH Smith branch in Market Square.

It comes after a six-week consultation on the proposals was held, and a petition with more than 2,000 signatures against the closure was presented to Post Office bosses.

Residents and campaigners have raised concerns that WH Smith’s branch in the town is too small to accommodate the Post Office.

District councillor Duncan Enright said: “The WH Smith is too small, too cramped and not accessible enough to accommodate the post office.

“That feedback was given to them loud and clear by both the town and district councils.

“Where is the evidence that they have listened at all?

“We will continue to highlight the problems with the plan and do everything we can to make sure Witney gets the post office services that it needs.”

Crown Network general manager Roger Gale said: “We are committed to keeping a Post Office branch in Witney and to maintaining the same levels of service for our customers.’’
