THE mayor of Witney, Peter Dorward, is hosting an evening with a Second World War theme at Langdale Hall on March 7.

Guests will be asked to wear costumes from the 1940s and the venue, which was a former drill hall, will be decorated with sandbags, blackout material, parachute silk, posters and artefacts.

There will be atmospheric sound effects and “rations” consisting of fish and chips.

The Wood Green School Band and a singer will perform music from the era on vintage gramophone players.

The mayor is raising money for his two selected charities, Combat Stress and Volunteer Link-up.

The event runs from 7.30pm until midnight. Tickets cost £20 and are available at Witney Town Hall and Renaissance, in Wesley Walk.

Mr Dorward said: “There seems to be a fascination for this era, with many re-enactment groups up and down the country.

“These events are genuinely good fun, particularly when people join in and dress the part.

“In addition, this year is the 70th anniversary of D-Day, so another very good reason to host a 1940s-themed event.”
