WEST Oxfordshire residents are being invited to shape up with the help of jogging sessions.

A series of eight-week Just Jog courses will start in Witney, Carterton and Eynsham later this month.

The courses will be led by qualified running instructor Lisa Betteridge, who will also offer nutritional advice to help people on the road to getting fitter and healthier.

The sessions are aimed at those who have no, or very little, previous experience of jogging.

Intermediate sessions will also be available for those who have some experience and would like to improve their pace.

The sessions will take place weekly from:

  • Sunday, April 27: Eynsham, meet at Bartholomew Sports Centre, in Back Lane, 9-10am
  • Monday, April 28: Carterton and Brize Norton, meet at Monahan Way pavilion, 6-7pm (beginners) and 7-8pm (intermediate)
  • Tuesday, April 29: Witney, meet at Deer Park shopping centre, 6-7pm (beginners) and 7-8pm (intermediate).

GLL is also considering setting up a group in Chipping Norton and would like anyone interested to get in touch.

The sessions are part of a community project run by West Oxfordshire District Council and GLL, which manages the council’s leisure facilities.

Ms Betteridge only started jogging three years ago, as part of a mother-and-child exercise group after the birth of her son. She went on to complete instructor training and is preparing to run her first London Marathon on Sunday, April 13.

She said: “I had never done any regular exercise before and certainly wasn’t a fan of running, so if I can do it, anyone can.

“Jogging is a great way of keeping fit and the sessions are very sociable. It’s good motivation to be part of a group and it’s amazing how quickly you can see yourself improving week-by-week.”

Richard Langridge, the council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “We’re keen to encourage and provide opportunities for residents to stay healthy and lead active lifestyles.”

The cost of courses is £24 for leisure centre members or £32 for non-members. Simply turn up and pay on the day.
