Postman sifted through mail to steal bank cards and PIN numbers

Witney Gazette: Damon Alvey Damon Alvey

A POSTMAN has been jailed for stealing cash cards and emptying people’s bank accounts.

Damon Alvey, of Friday Court, Thame, helped himself to post between June and October last year after he was moved by Royal Mail from Oxford to their Banbury sorting office.

The 45-year-old used his job to search for letters containing bank cards and PIN numbers, which he used to withdraw at least £4,033 from two customers’ accounts.

He pleaded guilty to one count of theft and four counts of fraud by false representation.

Timothy Boswell, prosecuting yesterday at Oxford Crown Court, said Alvey had also taken letters belonging to 15 other people and police found the remains of more post that had been shredded when they searched his home.

Mr Boswell said one of his victims was Darren Blythe, 34, of Bretch Hill, Banbury, who is registered blind and receives around £400 a month from the local authority.

Speaking after the hearing he said when he realised all the council money had been stolen, plus about £2,700 from another account, he was left feeling sick. He said: "Without that money I wouldn’t be able to afford to do anything. I wish he had got a longer sentence.’’ Timothy Greaves, defending, said his client had been a postman for three-and-a-half years but turned to crime after he got into £25,000 of debt.

Judge Ian Pringle sentenced Alvey to 10 months and ordered him to pay a £100 victims’ surcharge.

How about repaying the victims of his crime ? the full amount plus some damages would be nice. Hope he gets a good kicking while in prison, stealing is bad enough, but stealing from a blind man ? a theft too far !

I've been a Postman for 26 years . It does not take long for the thieves to be weeded out . Fortunately Most Postmen and Women are honest hard working people. I do blame the banks partly here though . If they had Recorded or sent them Special Delivery he would have been caught a lot quicker or he probably would not bother as it's very hard to get round tracked items.

You would think with bank cards / credit cards and PIN numbers the banks would send them all out as recorded or special delivery then they can make sure that they are being delivered

Its well know for years that post men steal. An ex post man said they do it all the time especially at Christmas and from birthday cards as people will stick in a tenner or twenty pounds for their grand children ect., I sent a birthday car and some photos to Paris In January and it never got there. A post man came to my door at Christmas with a small parcel and I got a card to say it was in the office up in Cowley and when I went to collect it they could not find it. Happened to me before as well when I left my mobile at a relatives house and they posted it on to me I never got it.......no surprise there really.....
