A new scheme has been launched to recognise sports and arts clubs in West Oxfordshire that are inclusive and welcoming to disabled people.

West Oxfordshire District Council has worked with local disabled people to develop the scheme to help clubs encourage more disabled people to take part in sport or the arts.

The first three clubs to receive recognition, which were revealed at the West Oxfordshire Sports Awards ceremony last week, are Windrush Valley Boxing Club, Witney Music Society and Witney Rugby Club.

They can now use a new inclusion symbol, pictured, at their premises, on websites and in publicity, to show that they are recognised as inclusive.

Richard Langridge, the council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “A lot of work has been going on in West Oxfordshire to break down barriers and ensure that people of all abilities have equal opportunities to participate in sports, arts and leisure activities.

“We know that many local clubs have taken steps to ensure that everyone can participate and this inclusion scheme will not only recognise this effort, but also set a standard for every club to reach and encourage more disabled people to get involved in these activities.”
