RAF personnel at Brize Norton are used to flying the latest mighty aircraft but on May 5 they will be hoping far less hi-tech winged creatures take off.

They are launching a duck race on Bank Holday Monday, May 5, to support the Royal Air Forces Association and the Cotswold Water Park Trust, with the main event being hosted by Olympic rowing legend Sir Matthew Pinsent.

Around 4,000 numbered plastic ducks will be thrown into the Thames at Lechlade at 2pm, with prizes for the first 20 across the line. It costs £2 to choose a duck.

There will also be funfair rides, competitions and other attractions at the Riverside Whard between 10am and 5pm.

Event organiser Sergeant Ali Hedworth, of XXIV Squadron at RAF Brize Norton, said he was pleased to support two worthy causes with the event.

Senior Aircraftsman Monika Dunkley said: “This event will be a great day out for everyone and it is a great way to show support for local charities.”
