THE curtain came down on the Oxford Mail Oxfordshire Winter Quiz League with the annual presentation evening held at the North Oxford Conservative Club.

The county’s top ‘quizzers’ assembled at the club to collect their awards in an evening which also incorporates the Ted Payne Memorial Trophy named in honour of the man who started the event with the help of the Oxford Mail in the 1980s. Is it really that long ago?

Witney Gazette:

Green Dragon (Haddenham), winners of the East Division

Talking to Graham ‘the Pad’ during the course of the evening, he told me it had taken him 28 years to realise his dream of lifting the county’s top quiz prize.

Well, mate, you’ve finally done it. With more than a little help, I guess, from Beth, Charles, Jeremy, Martin, David and Chris – your teammates of the Ploughman’s Bunch!, Wolvercote, Oxfordshire’s winning quiz team for 2013/14.

Witney Gazette:

The Blue Boar Bees received the North Division honours

The laurels on the night went to the Black Swan (Oxford), who lifted the Ted Payne Memorial by four points from the Green Road Club (Kidlington) with the Plough (Wolvercote) a further two points back in third place.

Witney Gazette:

Oxford Division champions, The Hatchet (Childrey)

For your notebooks, the Summer League starts on Thursday, May 22, with the league’s first round-up appearing in the Oxford Mail on Tuesday, May 27.

The Royal Sun receive their West Division champions trophy

Next winter will be the 30th anniversary of the Oxford Mail Oxfordshire Winter Quiz League and we cordially invite all Oxfordshire pubs and clubs to take part in what I’m sure will be a season full of fun and festivities starting in October.
