Council speeds up broadband plan

Witney Gazette: . .

A HIGH-SPEED broadband scheme is to be rolled out across the whole of West Oxfordshire.

West Oxfordshire District Council’s (WODC) cabinet yesterday agreed to work with the Cotswold Broadband group to achieve complete coverage.

Oxfordshire County Council’s Better Broadband project, working with BT, aims to deliver super-fast speeds to about 90 per cent of homes and businesses District councils are deciding how they will plug the gap and one option was to give £800,000 to the county council for its scheme. But WODC decided to use its own money as a separate investment with Cotswold Broadband.

The council expects to save £80,000 per year in the co-investment model.

Communities cabinet member Richard Langridge said: “We recognise the incredible importance of rural broadband to residents and businesses and we’re very focused on providing 100 per cent coverage. It’s an exciting and innovative approach to filling the gap. We owe it to our residents to do it. We weren’t satisfied with the 95 per cent coverage provided by the BT model.”
