ARTISTS are being invited to come up with designs for way-markers on Eynsham’s new art trail, which celebrates the centuries-old Wharf Stream.

West Oxfordshire District Council is looking for artists, schools and community groups from the Eynsham and Cassington areas to come up with ideas. Designs from three groups will be chosen, with each winning a £250 prize.

The way-markers will be 5ft oak posts, carved by a professional wood-worker.

They are the latest part of a joint public art project between the district council and Eynsham Parish Council to highlight the history of the stream.

The £20,000 project is being funded by money from the developer of the Swinford Green housing estate.

The deadline for submissions is July 7. For the design brief, call the district arts development team on 01993 861080 or email leisureandtourism@westoxon.gov.uk

Local artists Jane Tomlinson and Lorna Marrison were recently commissioned to create information panels for the start of the trail, in Swinford Green, and end, near the Wharf Stream.

Ms Tomlinson said: “Like me, I don’t think many people know about the history of the Wharf Stream. To think that it was used for 600 years is amazing.”
