SERVICEMEN from the county now have a fitting tribute to their history. For too many years, documents charting the deeds of our troops, both living and fallen, have been hidden away.

Carted around Cowley Barracks and Slade Park, the nomadic exhibitions deserved a permanent home. And after years of hard work, the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum is finally open.

It seems fitting that the opening should coincide with two landmark anniversaries.

The ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings were broadcast globally, and the actions of Oxfordshire soldiers – humbling and heroic – were recounted and revealed.

Later this year the world will again remember as it marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The museum houses exhibitions honouring both these conflicts and more.

From fighting Napolean at the Battle of Waterloo to more recent campaigns, the county has had a major part to play in our country’s war effort.

The museum is a worthy home.

It will give people the opportunity to easily access a wealth of information about our servicemen.

With engaging and interesting displays, it will ensure the tales of those on the front line do not fade into the past.
