BURFORD Orchestra is holding an extra-special concert on Saturday, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its founding.

The occasion will be marked with a fun, informal, Proms-style concert at Burford School, featuring rousing classics such as Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, Henry Wood’s Fantasia on British Sea Songs and music from films including Star Wars, The Big Country and Pirates of the Caribbean.

The evening will end with an orchestral version of Sir Hubert Parry’s Jerusalem.

When the orchestra was founded in 1954 it comprised four string players, among them, Robin Gilbert, the deputy headmaster of Burford Grammar School, and Eric Reavley, the father of Cedric Reavley, the current owner of Reavley’s Pharmacy, in Burford High Street.

The quartet grew into a chamber ensemble and then a full symphony orchestra. Now made up of about 50 amateur musicians from Oxfordshire, it rehearses in Witney, and puts on concerts at the school three times a year.

Tickets are available on the door for £8 (£4 children) or see burfordorchestra.org.uk for more information.
