Up to 10,000 music-lovers descended on Great Tew yesterday for the start of Oxfordshire’s first big music festival of the summer.

Cornbury Music Festival got under way yesterday afternoon, with an eclectic line-up of artists including American hip-hop act Arrested Development, Sophie Ellis Bextor and Jools Holland with his Big Band.

Festival Director Hugh Phillimore said: “It’s absolutely lovely. The weather has been great and the site is filling up nicely with up to 80 per cent of people deciding to camp and make a weekend of it.”

The music continues today with performances by sixites legend Georgie fame, Illinois rocker Lissie, pop bands The Feeling and Scouting for Girls and Simple Minds.

The festival campsite hosted its own local bands competition called the Campfire Sessions on Thursday night, with the winner earning a slot at next year’s Charlbury Riverside Festival.

Oxford band Dance a la Plage came first with Wantage Afro-pop act Bright Works, featuring Oxford Mail reporter Pete Hughes on guitar, coming second.
