Students hunt for old village at Cogges Manor Farm
5:30pm Wednesday 16th July 2014 in News
ARCHAEOLOGY students at Oxford Brookes University are analysing the results of an underground survey they carried out at Cogges Manor Farm in Witney in search of a medieval village.
Using gradiometers – made in Witney by Bartington Instruments – to measure magnetic waves in the soil, they created a detailed picture of the site without digging trenches. The images will help to identify specific sections for more in-depth study.
Dr David Griffiths, who led the study, said: “[The village] has been spoken a lot about at Cogges but no one has found it so far. We did not find any obvious trace, partly because we didn’t do any digging, but there’s a lot of medieval pottery, so it could have been in the vicinity of the farm.
“It’s likely it could be closer to where Church Lane is now.”
