CONCERNS have been raised about plans to place a zebra crossing on one of Witney’s busiest streets.

Oxfordshire County Council is currently consulting on the proposals, which would see the crosswalk placed on Bridge Street, between the CostCutter newsagent and the street leading to Pirate Fitness.

Newsagent owner Christopher Howard said that creating a zebra crossing may make traffic worse.

He said: “We do need something here for people to safely cross, but I do not think this is the answer. It is often very congested outside our store and in the mornings and evenings it is completely gridlocked.

“The stop-starting would not help at all with traffic in the town. The zig-zag markings would also restrict where our delivery trucks could stop and that could also cause disruption elsewhere.’’ The county council has said the works could go ahead as early as February next year if the plans are approved.

But Witney East district councillor Duncan Enright said: “It is a nightmare crossing the road in Bridge Street, so it would be good to have a crossing.”

The consultation on the proposed zebra crossing ends on Thursday.
