THE Middletown Grange care home in Hailey is in the running to win a national award for its garden.

The home has reached the semi-final of the Barchester in Bloom competition, for best overall garden and best sensory garden.

The contest is run each year by the home’s owner, Barchester Healthcare, which operates about 200 homes in the UK.

Gardener John Haskell, 59, from Witney joined the home in May, after spending 42 years working as a telecommunications engineer.

He said: “It would be fantastic to win. This has been a total change of activity for me, so it’s a great surprise to get this far.

“I think we’ve got as good a chance as anyone of winning.”

Judges will visit the home and three finalists will be chosen by the end of the month.
