A MAN has been arrested after an elderly cyclist was seriously injured in a suspected hit-and-run at the Eynsham roundabout yesterday, police said.

The A40 was closed for almost three hours in both directions following the incident, which happened just before 11am at the junction with the B4449.

The cyclist, who is believed to be in his 70s, was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, in Oxford, with serious head injuries.

Police said a vehicle failed to stop. A man was later arrested in connection with the incident and was being held in police custody last night.

The A40 was reopened at about 2pm.

A spokeswoman for South Central Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 10.57am to reports of a road traffic collision between a van and a pushbike on the A40.

“We sent two ambulance crews, a doctor and a rapid response vehicle and the air ambulance was also dispatched. They were on scene treating a male believed to be in his 70s for a major head injury.

“He has been taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital.”
