Free hospital patient transport for some 6,200 people, including cancer patients, ends today.

Leaders of the Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (OCCG) agreed in September to change the service, saving £795,833 a year.

It said those who will no longer be able to use it were of the least need, or those “capable of walking and getting in and out of vehicle unaided” with “minimal assistance”.

The service is run by South Central Ambulance Service, but funded by OCCG.

The commissioning group is facing £15.7m savings to balance this year’s £638.6m budget.
