IT wasn’t so long ago that Christmas jumpers were the least-wanted present to receive from mum or gran.

But in recent years the garish knitwear has experienced a revival and Save the Children has harnessed the power of the sweater to raise money for a good cause.

Yesterday was the third annual national Christmas Jumper Day and people across Oxfordshire donned cardis, crews and roll necks to support the occasion.

Staff at software development company White October were among those who got in on the act, raising £40 for the charity.

Helen and Douglas House used the day to raise money for the children and young people’s hospice, but encouraged people to donate to any good cause they wanted.

Individual giving co-ordinator Katie Walton said: “It went really well. We have all worn Christmas jumpers today and made a donation.

“We have got a pug on one of the jumpers and it has gone down really well.

“Everybody has had a bit of fun and it is all for a good cause.”

Save the Children spokeswoman Steph Aldrich said: “All money raised from Christmas Jumper Day will go towards helping the most vulnerable children in the world.

“By supporting Save the Children and taking part in Christmas Jumper Day and donating just £1-£2, you’ll help save lives in some of the toughest parts of the world, and give children living in poverty here in the UK the chance to fulfil their potential.”
