AN RAF servicewoman based at Brize Norton has set her sights on getting to the top of the Christmas single chart.

Flight Lieutenant Adele Dunlop, 38, lent her voice to the song 1914 – The Carol of Christmas, with the RAF Spitfires choir.

One hundred years on from the first Christmas of the First World War, the song is a poignant tribute to the 1914 Christmas truce when troops on both sides laid down their weapons and played football in no man’s land.

Profits from the sales of the single, commissioned for the RAF Benevolent Fund, will raise money for the fund, The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, and ABF, The Soldiers’ Charity.

Flt Lt Dunlop said: “As a member of the Armed Forces, it is such an honour to be involved in this great cause and to help raise money for service charities.

“Working in the RAF and particularly as a flight commander, I have seen how the service charities have supported individuals under my command and how their work has benefited many individuals.

“Groups such as the RAF Spitfires Choir have also been supported by the RAF Benevolent Fund and without their support, the choir would cease to exist.”

The single, accompanied by a specially commissioned video, was composed by Chris Eaton, who wrote Sir Cliff Richard’s 1990 Number One Christmas hit Saviour’s Day, and Judd Field.

“The 35-strong choir recorded it in London in October and the video was filmed in Westminster Abbey.

It features an ensemble of military voices and soloists including 12-year-old Canter-bury Cathedral chorister and BBC Radio 2’s Young Chorister of the Year finalist William Inscoe.

Flt Lt Dunlop added: “The main reason for wanting the song to reach number one is purely so that we raise as much money as possible.

“I hope people from my home town and all over the country will get behind the song and show their support for our servicemen and women. These charities make a real difference.”

Flt Lt Dunlop, originally from Leeds but posted to Brize Norton in September, has had a passion for music from an early age and joined her school and university choirs.

She joined the RAF in 1999 and has served in the UK and overseas in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2009 she joined the RAF Spitfires Choir, and she is part of the choir committee as its costume member.

The song is available on iTunes, Amazon MP3 Store and Google Play, with 100 per cent of the profits from the sales of the song going to the three military charities.
