LIBRARIES across the county are collecting unwanted books for charity during this month and February.

Oxfordshire County Council’s library service has launched the appeal in association with the National Literacy Trust.

Donations of second-hand books will be accepted at five libraries – Oxford Central, Witney, Banbury, Cowley and Didcot. Donations placed in the drop-boxes in libraries will be re-used and sold through charity website Better World Books. The scheme will run until Friday, February 27.

County council cabinet member for cultural services Lorraine Lindsay Gale said: “I am sure there are plenty of people in Oxfordshire who received books for Christmas but have little space on their bookshelves.

“Those looking to trim their book collection to make space for their new arrivals can do so via our scheme in libraries in the New Year and they can do so in the knowledge that they will be helping the literacy of young people.”

The National Literacy Trust runs initiatives to develop a love of reading and increase literacy among children.
