AN UNWANTED dog is in desperate need of a loving home after spending more than 400 lonely days an Oxfordshire animal centre.

Homeless hound Kenny, a collie-cross Staffordshire bull terrier, has spent more than 9,700 hours at charity Blue Cross’ rehoming centre in Burford.

More than 2,400 dogs have left the charity’s 12 rehoming centres with new families in the 13 months Kenny has been at the Shilton Road centre.

Centre manager Jenna Martyn said she feared seven-year-old Kenny has been unable to find a home because pet lovers find him unattractive.

She added: “We think people are put off by Kenny’s breed, which is a shame as he’s a super dog.

“We also think people are put off by his looks as he’s not what people perceive as a ‘cute’ dog. But we all think he’s adorable and very handsome.

“There’s no time limit on how long dogs stay with us, but we are desperate to see him happily settled with a new family.”

Small animal rehoming manager Laura Crofts added: “He is a lovely dog and if you want a companion to greet you when you come home at night he would be absolutely ace.”

Kenny arrived at the centre, which can care for up to 150 animals, in February 2014 after his owners moved home and had to leave him behind.

More than 10,000 people have applied online to rehome a Blue Cross dog while Kenny has been at the centre, but he has been overlooked every time.

And last year, the centre helped 317 dogs find new homes but were unable to find a loving owner for Kenny, who centre staff said enjoys walks and craves cuddles.

Ms Martyn said: “Kenny is such a loving dog, all he wants is to be snuggled up with people.

“When he first arrived with us he was extremely nervous and wary, but our behaviour team spent lots of time with him, helping to build his confidence and showing him how to be brave.

“He’s come on in leaps and bounds and is so much happier now. We all love him to bits, but it breaks my heart he’s been here for so long.”

Centre staff have tried to spread the word about lonely Kenny on social media, shown him to potential owners visiting the centre and have taken Kenny on outings to try and meet new people.

Staff have even taken him home on weekends.

Dogs on average find a new family within 30 days. It costs £125 to adopt a dog staying at a Blue Cross centre.
