A 19 per cent hike in allowances for members of Oxfordshire County Council will take effect from today.
Councillors agreed they should get the increase in basic allowances in December 2014, a day after warning of a further £20m cuts in council services.
A majority of councillors agreed to back recommendations of an independent remuneration panel to increase the allowances which compensate members for the time they spend doing council work.
The overall cost of the increases agreed was £150,000. Basic councillors’ allowances are to rise from £8,376 to £10,000, leader Ian Hudspeth’s allowance will rise from £25,131 to £29,000 and deputy leader Rodney Rose’s allowance will rise from £16,754 to £20,000.
